As you know, practice makes perfect! Every week, along with each lesson, you are given some words to practice. I know that, as a beginner, you will find it difficult to read the entire words by yourself. Therefore, you are not asked to either read or write these words at this stage. Please do not try to pronounce these words on your own or you will remain in an insolvable confusion for good. All you have to do is identify the letters you have already studied. So, first go to the This week and study the new lesson carefully. Then click on the Useful drills button to get connected to this page. On this page you will find some words that seem quite stranger to you at the first glance. Nevertheless, you must at least be able to recognize the letters you have just studied on This week. And this is all I want you to do.
NOTE: as you see in the following words, there are no symbols (signs) on or under the letters. We, as beginners, use these symbols during our lessons to learn the correct pronunciation of the words. Later, after you got enough familiarity with the words and the way they are pronounced you would find it redundant to use these symbols with letters, except for some ambiguous words that are not used very often. I have eliminated these symbols on purpose to let you see the real Persian words that take no symbols with them.
Notes: 1- it is recommended that you visit Let’s Write page first before doing these exercises. It will certainly help you a lot with detecting the letters.
2- please pronounce the letters that we have already studied. For those letters that we haven’t studied yet, just find what you are asked but don’t pronounce them.
3- As you see, persian letters have ‘dots’ with them. Some letters may have up to three ‘dots’ while some others have no ‘dots’.
Questions:
In the following words, how many. do you detect?
Note: in addition to these questions, you may find other letters that we have already studied. To keep yourself updated, you’d better find those letters as well. For example, you may find or or and so on.
Please try to answer the questions first. Then, if you want to be sure, find the correct answers at the bottom of the following words.
The answers:
1. 4
2. 3
3. 4
4. 3
5. 3
6. 1
Pictorial answers:
1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6

First, I would like to thank you very much for your invaluable services to us all through your website lesson. I recently started learning Persian. I am now in Lesson 7. So far, you have made it simple for me to grasp. Nevertheless, I found something a little bit confusing today in the Useful Drills 7. Questions numbers appear to be the same thing, except that the three number 2 /ga:f/ are detached and the three number 4 /ga:f/ are attached. but no explanation was given as to the diference between them. Please, I need your help in understanding the difference and why.

Thanks Joe for asking, and thanks Marie for answering! Well done!
Both of you are right: there was something wrong up there! Number 4 was supposed to be small letter ‘gaf’, as Marie has mentioned. (It is corrected now)
Thanks again
(and pleas do it again!)
Best,
Hassan
Understood. Thank you very much, Marie.

Question: #5 says only 3 of the letters. What about Line 2, 4th word from right, what appears to be the 2nd to last letter? Is that not lower case /fe/? Thank you for your help!

Hmm, question 3 asks about the big (=ending) Kaf, and there is none of them in the text :)
But the answer tells about the small (=initial) letter…

The letter KAF is supposed to be found as a big letter in the text but I think there are only small letters KAF?
Thank you for this website, it’s an amazing work and I’m glad to learn that great language!

Dear Mr Hasan, when I did practice without seeing the answer, I was supprised, since No 3 the answer is 4 instead of 0 (zero), since my opinion the letter is big letter instead of little one. Please see the words, the big letter /ka:f/ not indicated in the words but the small letter /ka:f/, of course the are 4, aren’t there?. Best regards from naughty pupil.

I’ve noticed that too. Are we both wrong?
(anyone?)

In reference to #3 I wonder how one is to know that the ka:f is big or small in the writing? When we look at the large and small ga:f in the sample, we clearly see the difference between the two. But to me all the letter ka:f in the writing samples look like small (no tail curving up at the end), but the one in question #3 looks like a big (tail curving up at the end). Please help me distinguish between the two. Thanks
P.S. Awesome site, thank you!! :)
